Thanjavur

Amidst the southern heartland of Tamil Nadu, there is Thanjavur which captures the glory of ancient India’s art and architecture. Once the capital of the powerful Chola kingdom, the city has numerous heritage sites and cultural treasures to amaze travellers. The monument which stands out in Tanjavur tourism is the Brihadeeswarar Temple or the Periya Kovil. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the temple dates back to the 11th century. The famous Thanjavur painting style that originated here uses gold foil, glass beads or even precious stones. The Saraswati Mahal Library, with more than 30,000 European and Indian manuscripts on palm leaf and paper, is Asia’s oldest library. The food earns a special place in the Thanjavur travel guide with its authentic traditional local dishes, such as the Thanjavur thali banquet, fit for a king.
