Rock Garden is a result of the vision of Nek Chand Saini, a PWD worker in Chandigarh. He was a self-taught artist who had no training in art or sculpting. He started the construction of the garden in the 1950s secretly, with a fear of being caught as he was working in a forbidden area without permission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He cleared a small patch of the jungle near Sukhna Lake. The local authorities discovered it after a while and asked him to discontinue it. However, by this time, his work had already gained public recognition. As a result, he got official approval for his efforts, and Rock Garden was opened for tourists in 1976. In 1984, Nek Chand was awarded the Padma Shri for Rock Garden and was also designated as \u201cCreator Director\u201d of the garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
