India is a diverse country with a rich cultural heritage and numerous tourist attractions that foster tourism in India. Every state in India has something to offer to the millions of tourists who throng its territories all through the year. From beautiful beaches, picturesque hill stations, lush green forests to architectural wonders – India boasts of innumerable places that are astounding enough to mesmerize the onlooker. In the past few years, tourism in India has developed to a great extent and the tourism sector contributed to 9.2% of the GDP in 2018. Currently, India ranks 34 among 140 countries as far as tourism is concerned.
Although tourism generates 10% of jobs across the world, it still remains a highly undervalued profession. To encourage people to explore this field and generate revenue, it is important to enlighten them about the benefits of the tourism industry. For this reason, the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) commemorates 27th September as the world tourism day.
Every year, the UNWTO General Assembly chooses a country to host the world tourism day, which partners with the UNWTO and creates a unique theme on which the entire programme is organised. The sole purpose of such an initiative is to create awareness about the political, economic, cultural and social value of tourism among all citizens across the globe. The organisation also discusses the contribution of tourism in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals. This year, India is chosen to host the world tourism day 2019 in New Delhi. The theme for this year is ‘Tourism and Jobs: A better future for all’.
There are a number of benefits of tourism in India – boosting the economy, improving the environment and enhancing the health sector. This year’s theme is focussed on education, jobs and skills, the 3 most important areas that require considerable support and improvement to create interest and opportunities in the tourism sector. The Ministry of Tourism will be organising the programme in the Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, from 26th to 28th September. India National Tourism Awards are also presented to the best tour operators, hotels, restaurants, state or UT, travel bloggers and others under different categories during this function.
